Read about the sermon.
It’s a privilege to stand before you here and present the wonderful word of Yahweh!
May He bless His Word today and may it not come back void!
Last time I stood before you I preached about being in the Spirit. But then I had a feeling, I think it was from the Holy Spirit, that I should preach about being filled with the Holy Spirit.
How can you be in the Spirit if you don’t know how to be filled with the Spirit?
Later that day while I was talking to my beautiful wife about the sermon, she mentioned that I should preach about how to be filled with the Holy Spirit.
So, I think that was confirmation.
In this assembly we talk a lot about being filled with the Holy Spirit, being led by the Spirit, being in the Spirit and not in the flesh, and that’s a wonderful thing.
But some saints may not know how to be filled with the Holy Spirit. So, telling people to do something, but not showing them how to do it isn’t helpful.
So, I think it’s important that we know what to do to be filled with the Holy Spirit.
So, we are going to look at what the Word has to say about being filled with the Holy Spirit.
First, we’ll briefly look at the basics. The basics are things most of the saints should know.
Who is the Holy Spirit?
The Holy Spirit is Yahweh. Yahweh, Elohim, the God of the universe, has revealed Himself to us as Yahweh the Father, Yahweh the Son (Yahshua), and Yahweh the Holy Spirit.
Yahweh the Holy Spirit is the visible power of Elohim you see in the world.
When someone is raised from the dead, when miracles are performed, when someone is born again, all that happens because of the power of Yahweh.
The Person performing that power is the Holy Spirit.
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."”
Acts 1:8 ESV
“And the angel answered her [Mary], "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of Elohim.”
Luke 1:35 ESV
Being Born Again
We are all born sinners. When we repent of our sins and believe the Gospel of Yahshua, the Messiah, and receive the Holy Spirit we are born again.
There were some people in the Scriptures who repented of their sins and believed the Gospel, but they hadn’t yet received the Holy Spirit. They were prayed for and then they received the Holy Spirit.
Every child of Yahweh has the Holy Spirit.
“The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of Elohim,”
Romans 8:16 ESV
“And because you are sons, Elohim has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, "Abba! Father!"”
Galatians 4:6 ESV
Why We Receive the Holy Spirit
Children of Yahweh receive the Holy Spirit because they need to be changed.
We are born sinners, our thoughts are sinful, our behaviors are sinful, our intentions are sinful, everything we do and say as unbelievers is sinful.
When we receive the Holy Spirit, and we yield to the Holy Spirit, we start to change.
Our thoughts change, what we talk about changes, our intentions change, our values change. These changes happen by the power of the Holy Spirt.
But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit.
2 Corinthians 3:18 NKJV
“But when the goodness and loving kindness of Elohim our Savior appeared, He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to His own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us richly through Yahshua Messiah our Savior,
Titus 3:4-6 ESV
These changes happen because we need to be changed into the image of Yahshua Messiah. We will start to behave and act like Yahshua Messiah.
This change is necessary because it provides proof to you and to others that you are indeed a child of Yahweh.
If you haven’t changed since the day you were born again and you have been born again for at least a year, there are only two things that may be wrong:
(1) You don’t have the Holy Spirit, therefore you can’t change
(2) You have the Holy Spirit, but you don’t yield to Him
Both are bad and if you remain in both states, you will not inherit the Kingdom of God.
Why We Need to be Filled with the Holy Spirit
We need to be filled with the Holy Spirit because we need to:
(1) Change to look like Yahshua, this is Yahweh’s will, we are predestined to be conformed to the image of Yahshua
(2) We need to do work in the Kingdom of Yahweh
“For those whom He foreknew He also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that He might be the Firstborn among many brothers.”
Romans 8:29 ESV
When we behave like Yahshua, it is easier to preach the Gospel. More people can come to faith in Yahweh because they see the changes in your life.
More people are more likely to believe that Yahweh is real, that God is real, when they see change in your life.
Your preaching the Gospel is not just with words, but it is proven with your change in lifestyle.
Then, there’s work to do in the Kingdom. There are souls that need saved, there is work in the world that needs done and that work is only successful when it is done in the power of the Holy Spirit.
Working as pastors, evangelists, apostles, deacons, missionaries, teachers, and all other offices are jobs in the Kingdom of Yahweh that need done.
“And Elohim has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating, and various kinds of tongues.”
1 Corinthians 12:28 ESV
All these must be done in the power of the Holy Spirit otherwise the work is useless.
For those who do these works in the flesh cannot please Yahweh.
Those who do their work well will be rewarded by Messiah Yahshua with an eternal crown and a whole lot more, when He comes in glory.
First, we need to know one thing.
If you don’t have the Holy Spirit, you’re going to Hell. I’m just being real with you.
If you don’t have the Holy Spirit, you’re going to Hell.
The Scriptures say, “Don’t have the Spirit, none of His.”
“You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to Him.”
Romans 8:9 ESV
So, what do you need to do to get the Holy Spirit?
Repent and believe the Gospel of Yahshua Messiah.
- Repent of your sins. You are a sinner. Your lifestyle is contrary to what Yahweh Elohim desires for you. You have sin, which came from Adam and Eve, our parents, and you have committed many sins.
- Ask to receive the Holy Spirit
Because Yahweh Elohim is holy, sinful people cannot be in His presence.
All sinful people are cast away from Yahweh and into Hell where there is continuous suffering and torment and gnashing of teeth. It’s the worst place you can ever go.
But, because of Yahweh’s love for us, He made a way for us to be reconciled to Him through His Son.
The suffering you’re supposed to receive in Hell, Yahweh placed on His Son Yahshua.
His Son died as a substitute for anyone who wants his or her sins taken away.
Instead of you dying and being cast into Hell for eternity, Yahshua died in your place.
Yahweh placed your sin on Yahshua, and punished Him like a sinner receiving the eternal condemnation on the cross as you would receive in Hell.
Yahshua was buried and He rose again. This is proof that all who believe in Him, though they die, they shall live again forever like Him. They shall never experience the fires of Hell.
God can forgive you your sins ONLY if you repent of your sins and you believe what I’ve just told you.
This is the Gospel of Yahshua Messiah. This is the good news that your sins can be forgiven, and your condemnation wiped away, if you repent of your sins, you stop sinning, and you believe the Gospel of Messiah Yahshua.
If anyone hasn’t yet repented and believed the Gospel of Yahshua, please see me after this message and we can talk or see one of the elders.
When you repent and believe the Gospel, you’re on your way to salvation.
Yahweh will then place His Holy Spirit within you.
The Holy Spirit is:
(1) A sign, a seal, a stamp that you belong to Yahweh.
(2) A Guide to grow as a believer in Yahshua
But, if for some reason you haven’t yet received the Holy Spirit, you need to follow what Yahshua said:
You need to ask for the Holy Spirit.
“If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!"”
Luke 11:13 ESV
You need to pray and keep on praying and keep on praying and keep on praying until you receive the Holy Spirit.
How do you know when you have received the Holy Spirit?
- The most immediate sign is prophecy. You will speak of the goodness of Yahweh and declare His words. You will praise Yahweh and bless His Name!
For example, when King Saul received the Holy Spirit, he prophesied!
“When he turned his back to leave Samuel, God gave him another heart. And all these signs came to pass that day. When they came to Gibeah, behold, a group of prophets met him, and the Spirit of God rushed upon him, and he prophesied among them. And when all who knew him previously saw how he prophesied with the prophets, the people said to one another, "What has come over the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?"”
1 Samuel 10:9-11 ESV
“But Moses said to him [Joshua], "Are you jealous for my sake? Would that all Yahweh’s people were prophets, that Yahweh would put His Spirit on them!"”
Numbers 11:29 ESV
We see this in both the Old Testament books and the New Testament books.
What about speaking in tongues?
What is speaking in tongues when you break it down?
It’s prophesying in a different language.
On Pentecost when the saints spoke in tongues what did Peter say?
“But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel: 17 "'And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams…”
Acts 2:16-17 ESV
Peter was quoting Joel chapter 2:28 and further down.
Did Yahweh say when He pours out His Spirit, His people will speak in tongues?
No, He said they will prophesy! Prophecy is the immediate sign of the Holy Spirit entering you.
Don’t get stuck on speaking in tongues, that’s prophecy in a different language. Only look at prophecy for that is what the Scripture says.
So, if you prophesy in English, our common language, that’s good!
If you prophesy in a different language, pray that there may be an interpretation as well, so that those who hear may be edified.
Pray that you may prophesy! For such comes only from the Holy Spirit!
If you’re not sure if you have prophesied before, the pray that you may receive the Holy Spirit and prophesy!
After you have received the Holy Spirit, and you continue in the Word, within a year, you should start displaying the fruit of the Spirit.
Now after you have received the Holy Spirit, how do you get filled with the Holy Spirit?
We must know that having the Holy Spirit and being filled with the Holy Spirit are two different things.
Everyone who believes in Yahshua, repents and believes the Gospel will receive the Holy Spirit. If you doubt you have received Him, ask and Yahweh is more than willing to give you the Holy Spirit.
To be filled with the Holy Spirit, is to be completely led and directed by Him. Your thoughts and actions and your words all come from the Holy Spirit.
This is where all believers should be. This is where you should want to be.
Terms like “being in the Spirit” or “being led by the Spirit” or “baptized in the Spirit” all mean the same thing. It’s being overcome by the Holy Spirit.
So, how can we be filled with the Holy Spirit every day?
- Ask. Yahshua said if you ask anything in My Name according to the will of the Father, I will do it. It is Yahweh’s will that we be filled with the Holy Spirit so we can do His work.
We are told to pray without ceasing. So, if you want to be filled with the Holy Spirit, you pray, and you keep on praying, and you keep on praying, and you keep on praying, and you keep on praying, you pray on Shabbat, you pray on the first day Sunday, you pray on Monday, you pray on Tuesday, you keep on praying, you keep on praying until what?
Until you are filled with the Holy Spirit!
You don’t just pray one time, what kind of faith is that? You keep on praying and you keep on praying and you keep on praying, and you pray multiple times a day, every day, until you are filled with the Holy Spirit!
I will keep on praying until there is plenty of evidence that I am filled with the Holy Spirit.
I will pray on Shabbat and ask other people to pray for me until there is plenty of evidence that I am filled with the Spirit.
I pray every day to be filled with the Holy Spirit so I can always be in Yahweh’s will.
Being filled with the Spirit and being baptized in the Spirit and being led by the Spirit are all the same things.
Being filled with the Spirit doesn’t mean prophesying all the time or jumping for joy all the time or being overly active all the time.
Yahshua was filled with the Holy Spirit, He was the Holy Spirit, yet sometimes He was quiet, sometimes He went off to pray alone, sometimes He was talking normally, sometimes He was preaching on the mountainside, sometimes He was turning tables.
But He was always filled with the Spirit. He was always led by the Holy Spirit. So, don’t think you’re filled with the Holy Spirit only when you prophesy or are active doing something.
When Yahshua was sleeping in the boat when the disciples were sailing, He was still filled with the Holy Spirit.
When Pilate asked Him questions and He was quiet, He was still filled with, led by, the Holy Spirit.
You are filled with the Holy Spirit when your words, your actions, your thoughts, all align with the Word of Yahweh.
It doesn’t mean you don’t get tempted. All believers get tempted.
But, it means, when you get tempted, you submit your thoughts to the Word of Yahweh.
OK, so how to be filled with the Holy Spirit? One: pray without ceasing until you receive the Holy Spirit and there’s evidence. The evidence is the fruit of the Spirit.
Ask Yahweh to be filed with the Holy Spirit every day.
So, what’s the second answer?
(2) Continuous Obedience to the Word
If we ask to be filled with the Holy Spirit and we continuously obey the Word, we shall definitely be filled with the Holy Spirit.
This is Yahweh’s will saints.
The reason why some of you aren’t filled with the Holy Spirit daily is because you don’t obey Yahweh daily.
You obey Yahweh in some things but not in everything. You do the things in the Bible that you like and not everything that’s written in it.
You are what is known as half-hearted, or lukewarm, or a casual Christian. You’re not hot. You’re not sold-out. You’re not all in.
And because you’re not all in, you can’t be filled with the Holy Spirit. Yahweh knows that you’re not that serious about your faith.
Think about it. If you were in a relationship with someone but they only called you a few times, sometimes they picked up the phone, sometimes they didn’t, you never met any of their friends maybe one or two, you never met any of their family, maybe a cousin here or there...
Do you think that person is serious about a relationship with you?
Of course not! You wouldn’t want to date that person!
So, it is the same when you are half-hearted with Yahweh. You’re not serious about your relationship with Him.
But, with Yahweh, it’s not just a relationship. It’s a marriage. We are betrothed to Him looking forward to the wedding.
But, some of you aren’t serious about your betrothal or engagement.
That’s why you don’t talk to Him every day. You don’t pray every day or pray multiple times a day.
You don’t let Him in all your life. He is not ruling all your life, just some of it.
That’s why when you pray to Him, He sometimes feels cold, or distant. Of course He’s cold and distant. You haven’t opened up your whole life to Him.
You’re not obedient to everything you know in the Scriptures.
One thing about today’s church is a lack of diligence.
You must diligently pursue Yahweh. It’s like being in a relationship.
Diligence is steady, earnest, energetic effort.
If you don’t make an effort to call or text your fiancé, you don’t spend time together, you don’t talk about your feelings, that relationship is dying. If you continue in that way, that relationship will soon be dead.
If you’ve been born again for more than two years and you’re not filled with the Holy Spirit, you’re not led by the Spirit, you don’t hear Yahweh’s voice speaking to you, then you lack one thing: diligence.
You’re not actively pursuing Yahweh. You’re not diligently chasing after Him.
You’re not reading your Bible, not just to read it, but to find out who Yahweh is and what He wants, and to do what He wants.
You’re not reading the letters of Paul to find out how believers ought to behave and trying to live like that.
You’re half-hearted and lukewarm and if you continue like that, you will NOT inherit the kingdom of God.
Just like if you were engaged to someone. We are engaged to Yahshua. I know we think we are the bride of Yahshua, but we are not His bride yet. We are betrothed to Him. It’s an engagement built on a covenant.
We are not His bride yet. We have made a commitment to follow Him and to obey Him. We have made a commitment to be faithful to Him until He returns.
The wedding happens when He comes. Those who remain faithful when He comes will continue to the wedding and then we shall be His bride.
The wedding is coming but only those who are completely committed to Him will make it to the wedding.
So, like Morgan and I were engaged or really, betrothed. We were in a covenant relationship, committed to one another, looking forward to the wedding.
But if Morgan started showing signs of not being serious. She’s not picking my calls or calling me back. Not texting back. She starts showing signs of not being committed.
Our relationship would have become dry and then guess what? There would have been no wedding.
Give me back my ring.
It would have been the same if I started showing a lack of commitment. Morgan wouldn’t have agreed to marry me.
If we’re going to be married, we have to be completely committed.
You see I bought her a beautiful engagement ring. It’s a gorgeous ring that sparkles even in little light.
That ring was a sign that Morgan is a betrothed woman. She is taken. She is committed to someone and she will be married soon.
That engagement ring is like the Holy Spirit. It’s a seal, a sign, that the one who has the Holy Spirit is to be married to Yahshua. He or she is to be part of the bride of Yahshua.
But, you see, it’s not the engagement ring that determines whether one will be married. It’s the commitment.
It’s not having the Holy Spirit that determines whether one will be part of the bride of Yahshua, it’s the commitment.
“Brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death, 22 and you will be hated by all for my name's sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.”
Matthew 10:21-22 ESV
“So Yahshua said to the Jews who had believed Him, "If you abide [continue] in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."”
John 8:31-32 ESV
Morgan would have had the engagement ring. But, if she became uncommitted, there would have been no wedding.
It’s the same thing with Yahshua. Just having the Holy Spirit doesn’t mean you will make it to the wedding. You must be committed to Yahshua.
If you’re going to be the bride of Yahshua, you have to be completely committed. Being half-hearted, lukewarm, double-minded, casual Christian means there’s no wedding for you.
You have to be completely committed.
“"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.”
Matthew 7:21 ESV
These last few verses are all talking about complete or continuous obedience.
Now, I could give you examples of people in the Scriptures who were committed to Yahshua and were filled with the Holy Spirit. We could talk about David, or Joshua, or Daniel, or the disciples after Pentecost, or Philip, or Stephen.
But, I thought, what about here.
Why not give examples of saints right here in the assembly who have been led by the Spirit and it was evident to all.
So, I’ll ask Brother Leonardo and then Evangelist Denise to talk about how they are led of the Spirit.
Brother Leonardo was led by the Spirit at the Feast of Tabernacles, and led us into prayer.
Evangelist Denise prophesied, speaking in tongues, at the Feast of Tabernacles.
So, we’ll ask these saints what they were doing and how they live their lives so we can see live examples.
If you want to be filled with the Holy Spirit, you must first:
(1) Ask Yahweh, continue asking until it is evident to all that you are filled with the Holy Spirit
(2) Continuously Obey the Word
(Pastor Stephen sermonette?)
May Yahweh bless you!
