Shalom saints! I hope you’re all doing well.

Last time we talked about the Gospel of Yahshua Messiah. This message is a follow-up to the Gospel.

Those who believe the Gospel have eternal life. They are adopted into the family of Yahweh.

They become the children of Yahweh. Not children born of a man and a woman, but children born of God!

“But to all who did receive Him [Yahshua], who believed in His Name, He gave the right to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.”

John 1:12-13 ESV

Just as Elohim cannot die so His children will never die. Though they die, their bodies die, yet shall they live forever.

“Yahshua said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?””

John 11:25-26 ESV

So now, what happens to someone who is born again? After you are saved, born again, what happens now?

Do you continue living the way you lived? Do you go back to the sin from which you were saved?

I tell you the truth, if you live now as you lived when you were unsaved, you make the Gospel of Salvation of no effect.

The children of Yahweh do not live like unbelievers. They live like Yahshua, who is the only begotten Son of Elohim. He is our example.

There is at least one verse that connects the Gospel with what a person who is born again ought to do.

“And Yahshua came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.””

Matthew 28:18-20 ESV

The process of salvation includes making disciples.

When Yahshua preached the Gospel, those who believed in Him became followers of Him.

They either followed Him literally from town to town as He went on preaching or they believed on His word and changed their lifestyles following what He taught.

We are told to go and make disciples.

At Congregation of Yahshua, we ought to be making disciples.

So, when we preach the Gospel, we must also preach how to follow Yahshua.

Today, we are going to talk about “How to Become a Disciple of Yahshua.”

Yahshua gave us the qualification to become a disciple. Let’s go to Luke.

“Now great crowds accompanied him, and he turned and said to them, 26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. 27 Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.”

Luke 14:25-27 ESV

And later:

“So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.”

Luke 14:33 ESV

Prior to that:

“And He said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me. 24 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.”

Luke 9:23-24 ESV

A disciple does the work of Yahshua. A disciple is a student of Yahshua and a servant of Yahshua.

A disciple also preaches the Gospel. But, a disciple cannot preach the Gospel without him or her knowing and following Yahshua.

My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.

John 10:27 ESV

There’s some time between when one is born again to the time one becomes an effective disciple of Yahshua, serving Yahshua.

We see this time between when Yahshua told the disciples to follow Him and when He sent them out to go and preach the Gospel of the Kingdom.

Those that believed Him, He sent out to preach the Gospel.

“And He called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, 2 and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of Elohim and to heal.”

Luke 9:1-2 ESV

Then after sending out the 12 disciples, he sent out 72 other disciples.

“After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them on ahead of him, two by two, into every town and place where He himself was about to go.”

Luke 10:1 ESV

You see that disciples of Yahshua follow Him and do the work that He did, proclaiming the Gospel, preaching, healing, teaching, and serving in the power of the Holy Spirit.

However, my point is that every disciple of Yahshua was taught by Yahshua. Yahshua has appointed ministers in His church to teach His disciples as well.

An effective disciple is one who follows Yahshua and does the work of Yahshua.

An ineffective disciple is one who is a young believer, spiritually young, and not yet trained. So, yes, you believe, you’re born again, but you’re still immature and thus ineffective.

So, how does one become a disciple of Yahshua. Yahshua told us to go and MAKE DISCIPLES.

This making takes some time.

Yes, you are born again, but how do we become disciples. When we become disciples, then we can become servants of Yahshua. Then we can do the work of Yahweh.

It took the disciples 3 years.

(The disciples were also waiting for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.)

I won’t spend much time going deep into teachings. We’ll only talk about a few things. If we focus on a few things and we do them well, then we can move on to other things.

So, how do you become an effective disciple of Yahshua?

1. Desire for the Word

Rid yourselves, therefore, of all malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander. 2 Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk [the Word], so that by it you may grow up in your salvation,

1 Peter 2:1,2 Berean Study Bible

(Talk about this)

2. Obeying the Word

The next is obeying the Word. Reading the Word and not obeying it is useless. It does nothing for you. Obey no matter what...

Discipline your body to obey the Word no matter what...

““Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?

Luke 6:46 ESV

“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. 24 For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. 25 But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.”

James 1:22-25 ESV

Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep His [Yahshua’s] commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him,

1 John 2:4 ESV

You can only understand the Scriptures if you do them. Yahweh blesses the doers of the Word and not those who hear only.

What will this obedience lead to?

3. Renewing of Your Mind

This will lead to a renewing of your mind...

“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”

Romans 12:1-2 KJV

(Talk about this)

How long this takes depends on you...
